WORKSHOPS:

1.  Social Justice Through a Corporate Lens A discussion of human rights in the context of global and corporate injustices through the venue presented by The Coca-Cola Company. Moses Odida Latigo will also offer some insight as to how global injustices can be challenged by people who see positive social and ecological change.

2. He is "Bleep"! She is "Bleep"! This is a "Bleeping" School! The language we use everyday can affect our self-worth and the culture of our school communities. Words and actions do have a powerful impact on our daily lives. This interactive workshop, led by Ms. Sharon Berry-Ross of the St. Clair CSB, will look at how respectful language can really pay off for you, your school and in your future endeavors.

3. Spirit and Song Inspired by the contemporary Catholic Christian music of Matt Mager and the Spirit and Song series, the St. Michael S.S. choir will perform and teach you the repertoire of the music they use in the last Sunday of each month at the Youth Mass of St. Joseph/Immaculate Conception Parish in Stratford. The choir consists of 20 students and teachers who perform with drums, guitars, bass and keyboards. Come ready to participate or just listen. The Ministry of Music is alive and well in the Catholic Church. (Workshop runs Friday May 28th only) LH105 Labatt Hall

4.  Guided Meditation Workshop In the midst of our busy schedules, we often don’t take the time to sit in the quiet and reacquaint ourselves with God. You are invited to participate in a guided meditation facilitated by Mr. Silvestro and Mrs. Lajoie, Chaplains at Catholic Central and Regina Mundi in London.

5. The Labyrinth The Labyrinth, which has been around for centuries, is making a comeback. It is, for most, a form of prayer not yet experienced. Students who have walked the Labyrinth have used the words “amazing”, “calming” and “awesome” when describing their experience. So try something new, and go for a walk with Jesus. (W174)

6. Every Little Bit: A Journey to Haiti For the last seven years, Marg and Jim Brickman have frequented the rural Kai Mira Orphanage and hospital in northern Haiti to give supplies and their time to the villagers. Since the earthquake of 2010, they have returned to give assistance and support to the many victims of this tragedy. Responding in their calling to improve the plight of the Haitians, Marg and Jim collect every little bit to share with others and help as much as they can. Slides, artifacts and stories will provide a realistic and inspiring presentation of their mission to help Haiti.

7.  Weaving Milk Bags for Haiti Through engaging, interactive, multimedia activities,  participants within this workshop will experience and learn about a unique approach to earn 6 credits toward graduation over the course of a semester while actively participating in meaningful and sustainable social justice outreach and environmental stewardship initiatives on local and global scales.

8. Habitat for Humanity/Dominican Republic: Educational Overseas School Experiences St. Michael Catholic Secondary School Youth Leaders from Stratford Ontario will introduce the two main overseas service experiences. They will share the main purpose of the experience, how they influence them, and what new paths they have taken by having participated in the experience. They will also share the ideas for fundraisers, teacher support and parents involvement. They will introduce a short film and slide presentations to capture some the moments of these changing life experiences. Students will open up the floor for questions and dialogue. Their stories change other people’s lives and their friendships built in these experiences last a life time.

9. Our Kenyan Mission Trip: The Big Ideas Students from St. Anne’s Catholic High School in Clinton, Ontario and Ms. Jodi Kuran will share an overview of their mission to trip to Kenya with Free the Children. You will have an opportunity to delve into the big issues of what we are called to do now that we are aware.

10.  Social Justice Opportunities for High School Students: Camp Micah and One World For students interested in developing their leadership skills and awareness about justice and peace – come hear firsthand about the exciting and fun programs and staff at Camp Micah. Check out campmicah.ca, bring a friend and find out how you can benefit yourself and others. For any Grade 12 student or young adult who would like to learn about social justice issues through the experience of living and working with the economic poor, for 7 weeks this summer in Mexico, or for 6 months next year in Ghana or Central America – come hear first hand from a participant of the One World Global Education Projects.  Presenters: Dwyer Sullivan (Director Camp Micah) and Diana Mercedes (facilitator with groups to Mexico and Ghana) (LH 103)

11.  Heartlinks Peru is a non-profit charitable organization based in London, Ontario that supports projects in northern Peru.  These projects focus on the empowerment of women and young people.  Students will learn about the participatory model that is used in small rural communities to identify needs and implement community development initiatives.  They will hear about the impact on Peruvian families of projects in areas such as education, nutrition, health and income generation.
(Workshop runs Thursday, May 27th only)

12.  Free the Children and Me to We Leadership and Social Justice Workshop Through fun and interactive modules, participants will learn how to increase their awareness surrounding social justice issues.  Students will also learn important steps to becoming leaders in their local communities and overseas by turning their passions into action. (LH 101)

13. Social Justice Documentaries Can filmmakers save this planet? Well ... not by celluloid alone. But people certainly can. The “reel” question is: Who will save the people? That is the question that young Catholic filmmakers in Huron-Perth were asked. In response, dozens of students used their creativity through media arts by competing in SOCDOCS, a video festival with a spiritual edge. Find out how you too can join in next year when King’s and Huron-Perth co-sponsor the inaugural SOCDOCS 2011, a film festival focusing on peace, compassion and justice. (LH 100)
